How the Freight Forwarding Process Works
From the moment you contact USKO Shipping to final delivery at the destination port or address, here's what the process looks like - step by step.
1. Cargo Booking & Pickup
Tell us your cargo type, origin, destination, and timeline. USKO arranges pickup or drop-off at our West Sacramento warehouse and issues a booking confirmation.
2. Documentation & Compliance
We prepare all required export documentation - commercial invoice, packing list, bill of lading, EEI filing, and any destination-country import requirements.
3. Warehousing & Consolidation
Cargo is received, inspected, and staged at our facility. LCL shipments are consolidated with compatible freight; FCL shipments are loaded to full container.
4. Port Loading & Vessel Departure
Containers are delivered to your chosen U.S. terminal - Oakland, New York, Savannah, Chicago, or Houston - and loaded onto the vessel for international transit.
5. Tracking

What is the difference between FCL and LCL, and which is cheaper?
FCL (Full Container Load) means you rent the entire container - typically a 20ft or 40ft unit - and your cargo travels alone from origin to destination. LCL (Less-than-Container-Load) means your cargo shares container space with other shippers' freight, and you pay only for the volume or weight you use. FCL is usually more cost-effective for larger volumes above roughly 15 CBM; LCL is better for smaller shipments. USKO Shipping can recommend the right option once we know your cargo dimensions and weight.
How long does ocean freight take compared to air freight?
Ocean freight transit times from U.S. West Coast ports (Oakland) typically range from 14 to 35 days depending on the destination region - shorter to Pacific destinations, longer to Europe or the Middle East. Air freight is significantly faster, usually 3 to 7 days for most international routes, but comes at a considerably higher cost per kilogram. USKO Shipping handles both and can help you weigh the cost-versus-time tradeoff for your specific shipment.
What documents are required to export cargo from the U.S.?
Standard export documentation typically includes a commercial invoice, packing list, shipper's letter of instruction (SLI), Electronic Export Information (EEI) filing via AES, and a bill of lading or air waybill. Additional certificates — such as a certificate of origin, fumigation certificate, or phytosanitary certificate — may be required depending on the cargo type and destination country. USKO Shipping prepares and coordinates all required documentation as part of the freight forwarding service.
Does USKO Shipping handle customs clearance at the destination?
USKO Shipping does not provide customs clearance services at the destination. We work closely with a network of experienced freight agents and licensed customs brokers in many destination countries who can assist with the import clearance process when needed.
We provide all required U.S. export documentation and help coordinate with the receiving party to support a smooth shipping experience. Import duties, taxes, customs fees, inspections, and local import requirements are determined by the destination country's customs authorities and are the responsibility of the importer, unless otherwise agreed in writing.
